Calculating age sounds trivial — until leap years, differing month lengths, and exact dates make it surprisingly easy to get wrong by hand.
Why Simple Subtraction Doesn't Work
Subtracting birth year from current year only gives an approximate age — it doesn't account for whether your birthday has already passed this year, or the exact number of days involved. A precise age calculation needs to compare full dates, including leap years (which add an extra day roughly every 4 years).
The Correct Method
Calculate the difference in years first, then check if the current month/day is before the birth month/day — if so, subtract one year, since the birthday hasn't occurred yet this year. For exact day counts, you need to account for varying month lengths (28-31 days) and leap year February (29 days).
