Running a speed test gives you three numbers — but most people only understand one of them. Here's what all three actually mean for your day-to-day internet experience.
Download Speed
This measures how fast data travels from the internet to your device — what matters for streaming video, downloading files, and loading web pages. Measured in Mbps (megabits per second).
Upload Speed
This measures how fast data travels from your device to the internet — critical for video calls, uploading files, and live streaming. Upload speeds are typically much lower than download speeds on most home connections, especially DSL and cable.
Ping (Latency)
Ping measures the round-trip time (in milliseconds) for a small data packet to travel to a server and back. Lower is better — this is the number that matters most for real-time activities like gaming and video calls, even more than raw speed.
What Counts as Good?
| Activity | Recommended Download | Recommended Ping |
|---|---|---|
| Web browsing, email | 5+ Mbps | Under 100ms |
| HD video streaming | 10+ Mbps | Under 100ms |
| 4K streaming | 25+ Mbps | Under 100ms |
| Video calls | 3+ Mbps up/down | Under 50ms |
| Online gaming | 10+ Mbps | Under 30ms |
Why Results Vary Between Tests
- Network congestion at different times of day
- Wi-Fi signal strength vs a wired connection
- Number of devices actively using the network simultaneously
- Distance to the test server
