PUF vs PIR Sandwich Panels: Which One Should You Choose?

If you're planning a cold room, freezer, or PEB structure, the panel material you choose affects your insulation performance, fire safety, budget, and how long the building lasts. The two most common options are PUF (Polyurethane Foam) and PIR (Polyisocyanurate). They look almost identical from the outside, but the core chemistry is different — and that difference matters more than most quotations let on.

What's the Core Difference?

PUF and PIR both start from similar polyol and isocyanate chemistry, but PIR is manufactured with a modified ratio and a trimerization process that makes the foam more thermally stable and significantly more fire-resistant. PUF is cheaper to produce and has slightly better raw insulation value per millimeter, but it burns more easily and degrades faster under sustained heat.
